The game itself was wild and wacky. Challenges were being called erratically. Players were diving in the penalty box like they were being shot with sniper rifles. Both managers complained about the refereeing – at one point Ferguson became so irate after one non-call he could be seen on the field gesticulating like a man who was being attacked by imaginary bees. The game was dramatic, high octane and perhaps the best game we’ve seen in the Premier League this year…but at the end of the day what this game will be remembered for was the comeback.

The FA Cup is famous for its ability to place minnows against sharks, but let’s face it – fourth round clashes between marquee clubs is on paper, just about as good as it gets. And this latest chapter in the long running Liverpool v Manchester United feud had fans salivating at the prospect.

If this turns out to be as close as Tottenham comes to the title this season (and between ourselves, it probably is), at least they can say they went down swinging. Beaten (thanks to Balotelli), and bloodied perhaps (again, thanks to Balotelli)…but definitely not broken. They fought like Lions in this one, clawing their way back from 2-0 to be 2-2 and looking to all and sundry like the more likely winners. If it was a fair world they would have been. It is not a fair world. Their demise came at the hands of a rising footballing icon. This defeat will not be easy to swallow.

It was great television at Liberty Stadium on the weekend – a combination of cabaret, comedy and drama culminating in a 3-2 victory for the home side and a game that will be remembered by Swansea fans for a long time. Goals were scored, accusations of diving were made, Managers criticised referees and a good time was had by all.
Premier League fans, welcome to 2012.

I hope you all had some time off and a good, relaxing Christmas break. It’s good to be back, right?
There was no break in the EPL mind you, the show rolled on as it always does with the usual mix of seasonal good cheer and hilarity. Thierry Henry made an Ali like comeback to Emirates Stadium (or is that Jeff Fenech like…we will see).

A good, competitive match between two of England’s very best, with the home team taking the points and the bragging rights with a 1-0 victory. No real surprise – (City are top of the table and feature roughly 38 million pounds worth of former Arsenal players in its ranks) but the Gunners had been in blistering form leading into this one and plenty of fans were talking up the upset.

Liverpool made a couple of major purchases last transfer window in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, in the hopes that these two attacking weapons would give the Reds the firepower they lacked with Torres no longer a part of the club (or, you know, when Torres was part of the club).

It wasn’t the most awe inspiring performance we have seen from the Red Devils, but a goal to Phil Jones gave United the win, and Sir Alex Ferguson some breathing room. A little bit anyways. The 1-0 win kept his club in vague striking distance of their cross town Manchester rivals, and took their unbeaten run at Villa Park to a ridiculous 16 years. To put that in perspective, the last time United lost at Villa Park Alan Shearer was a young man, Justin Bieber was in diapers, and the European economy was sound as the pound.

Another fun filled afternoon in the EPL – drama, goals, controversy, brain snaps. Manchester City went as close as they would like to go to finally losing a game, and Liverpool staked their top four credentials by taking it to the competition leaders at the City of Manchester Stadium. City got a point, but Liverpool made their point. A good time was had by all.

Storm clouds continue to gather above Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea suffering a 2-1 loss to Liverpool in a loss that hit their title ambitions like a body blow. It capped off a horror month for the Blues, losing to QPR, going through some racial vilification allegations involving John Terry, just survived Everton in the Carling Cup, had a life and death match with Blackburn and got pounded by Arsenal – and are taking a hammering in the UCL.
